We are currently in search of a VP of Communications and Marketing for a Reproductive Health Organization. The position is based in Washington, DC. This is a full-time, permanent assignment.

SALARY: 165,000 – 190,000/ annual

 

Is This Your Dream Job? The VP of Communications and Marketing is responsible for creating and implementing communications and marketing strategies in order to increase the organization’s visibility and awareness among its public and professional constituencies. They are responsible for achieving fundraising, program, and business development goals, and promoting the organization’s brand. The VP of Communications and Marketing oversees marketing, public relations/media, web, collateral communications materials, technical publications, and related activities. They will assist with the development and implementation of a strategic internal communications program. They will supervise the marketing and communications programs and technical publications teams, and manage the marketing and communications program budget. They will support the President, Board, and other staff in all public relations and media activities. They will coordinate with development, program, and policy managers to implement the marketing and communications strategy. The VP of Communications and Marketing reports to the CEO and manages 2 – 4 employees.

Our Ideal Candidate:

  • 10+ years of professional experience
  • 5+ years working as a vice president, director, or senior manager
  • BA/BS or MA/MS degree in marketing, communications, public/media relations, development, journalism, or related degree. Or, equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated experience and success working with media (TV, radio, print, Internet)
  • A record of developing, writing, and producing effective communications materials through print, broadcast, and electronic media
  • Significant experience and/or demonstrated interest in the nonprofit sector
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest and commitment to the areas of reproductive health, women’s rights, or international development
  • Leadership and employee management experience
  • Experience with strategic planning, budget development and management, supervision, partnering, and conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to tap the media, entertainment, corporate and/or political worlds in support of marketing and communications activities
  • Ability to successfully represent the organization to its external audiences in a variety of settings
  • Excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills
  • Good management skills and ability to provide supportive supervision to the Communications and Marketing team
  • Superb communications skills including the ability to listen; write and edit communications materials in a timely manner; conduct press briefing or conferences; and make oral presentations
  • Ability to develop and implement a strategy to effectively manage negative publicity and manage a public relations ‘crisis’
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally, as needed
  • Passionate about reproductive health, women’s rights, and/or international development missions
  • Excellent cross-cultural sensitivity and familiarity with developing countries’ culture, reality, challenges, and opportunities
  • Ability to successfully represent the organization to its internal and external audiences in a variety of settings, effectively communicating complex concepts and ideas in an engaging, simple manner
  • Strong team building and conflict resolution skills

 

How You Will Spend Your Day:

  • Create and implement an integrated and ambitious communications and marketing strategy for increasing the organization’s visibility and awareness among its public and professional constituencies, and supporting fundraising and program/business development activities
  • Develop, promote and oversee the integrity of the brand, maintaining brand prominence and consistency across all organizational functions, programs, and functions
  • Support brand development and harmonization for various programs, projects, and product lines
  • Direct a public relations and media program that promotes and creates a strong and positive public image and recognition of mission and its spokespersons through the mass media
  • Manage all media and press events
  • Direct and manage the web-marketing program that serves the agency’s marketing, fundraising and program/business development goals and mobilizes the organization’s public and professional constituencies through an informative, interactive, and state-of-the-art web site
  • Develop and produce high quality and timely collateral communications and marketing materials working with other staff, publications staff, and outside vendors. These include: annual report, quarterly newsletter for members, brochures and collateral materials for marketing and fundraising, fundraising letters/materials, and exhibits
  • Mobilize and oversee the development of written copy and graphics for marketing publications, the web, new releases, speeches/presentations, events and related activities
  • Oversee and guide the development, writing, editing, design, and strategic dissemination of technical publications directed to professional audiences
  • Lead strategy and implementation of the organization’s communications related to participation in key professional conferences
  • Assist in developing and implementing an integrated organization-wide internal communications program in close coordination with the Executive Team and Directors
  • Lead strategy and implementation of the organization’s communications around key policy and advocacy issues and activities
  • Coordinate communications support to the President for participation in high visibility events (e.g., speeches, presentations, media interviews)
  • Develop and manage the Marketing and Communications annual work plan and budget, assuming fiscal responsibility for cost-effective utilization of agency resources
  • Supervise and conduct performance management of the Communications and Technical Publications Teams
  • Proactively develop and maintain relationships with current and potential individual, private, or corporate donors
  • Develop, guide and lead implementation plans for cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and press/media relations with the President/CEO and other members of the Senior Leadership team
  • Provide support and guidance to the Board of Directors, as required
  • Ensure the integrity of financial reporting systems, consistent with donor expectations, and internal financial management policies and procedures
  • Build, lead and manage a unified and effective team
  • Partner, support, and work closely with program leadership and the policy and advocacy team to identify strategic needs and pursue opportunities for funding
  • Take leadership responsibility for development and implementation of overall organizational strategy, ensuring effective organizational management, and stewardship of resources and financial accountability
