If so, The Marine Mammal Center is searching for a talented Vice President of Conservation Programs to join their team and would like to hear from you.

The Marine Mammal Center (TMMC) is a growing nonprofit organization that advances global ocean conservation through rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research, and education. Since 1975, the Center has rescued more than 24,000 marine mammals along 600 miles of California coastline and the Big Island of Hawai`i. Their team of veterinary experts develop new clinical techniques to improve marine mammal rehabilitation and care and investigate how marine mammals use and interact with their ocean environment to better understand and protect them from many threats. Each year, TMMC’s education programs and hands-on training reach more than 100,000 children and adults, supporting the next generation of informed scientists and engaged citizens who will care for and ensure the health of our ocean and environment.

Summary/Objective

In the role of Vice President, Conservation Programs, you will be responsible for setting and executing the short- and long-term strategic direction of The Marine Mammal Center’s core rescue and response, animal care, and research programs. Reporting to the Interim Chief Programs Officer, the Vice President will oversee a $5-7 million budget, five senior direct reports, and approximately 40 indirect reports. Leveraging the organization’s talent and resources, the Vice President will develop, expand, and drive the strategic growth and execution of impactful programs. The Vice President is accountable for delivering concrete outcomes and building strategic relationships related to our California marine mammal response and care work, science agenda, international and domestic teaching program, and private sector engagement. A decisive decision-maker and innovative thinker, the Vice President is responsible for ensuring that teams within the portfolio have the direction, resources, and guidance needed to achieve program goals and objectives.

The Vice President will also ensure and measure program effectiveness, maintain fiduciary oversight of contracts and grants, integrate within the portfolio and across other Center programs and functions, and promote The Marine Mammal Center as a global leader on ocean conservation and marine mammal health. Given our work’s public-facing nature, the Vice President will work closely with our Communications and Resource Development teams to ensure alignment and balance across programmatic and other institutional goals. The Vice President will also represent the Center and our work with the public, the media, and policymakers.

The Vice President is an integral member of the leadership team driving strategy to improve organizational influence, impact, and effectiveness. The Vice President will work closely with other members of the Center’s leadership team to support executive leadership and set strategic direction to expand the Center’s initiatives’ scope and impact. As a member of the organization’s leadership team, the Vice President is responsible for modeling and supporting the Center’s organizational values and social norms. 

Key Responsibilities

Program Strategy and Impact

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of program strategy to include planning, delivery and impact, and continued growth for animal care, teaching hospital, pathology, and diagnostic laboratory and response and field operations
  • Evaluate and monitor current programs, trends, and scientific advances to keep the Center on target in meeting goals and performance metrics while identifying new opportunities for program expansion
  • Create and track metrics to evaluate and measure program impact
  • Develop, implement, and manage the annual internal department plan, including the department strategy, Objectives & Key Results (OKRs), workforce requirements, aligned work plans, and budget
  • Offer guidance and innovation to ensure quality, integrity, and continuous improvement of organizational programs and project management
  • Facilitate and support the progression of the Center’s research agenda and projects
  • Collaborate with the Development and Communications team to ensure program revenue needs and goals are met and that the program team is able to represent the Center at all times to public and professional audiences

Leadership and Management

  • Provide leadership within the organization as part of an 8-person leadership team. Directly supervise the Medical Director, Director of Pathology, Hospital Manager, Director of Response, and Data Scientist with indirect oversight of 40-person team
  • Set clear and transparent goals and priorities for the team, providing mentoring to direct reports as well as supporting staff’s professional growth and setting them up for success to meet, if not exceed, their goals
  • Ensure that department activities comply with all relevant standards and regulations
  • Supports and participates in the Center’s Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) program, initiatives, and training
  • Model and support a positive and inclusive culture and uphold the Center’s values
  • Work closely with other members of the Center’s leadership team to support organizational leadership and set and advise on strategic direction to expand the scope and impact of the Center’s initiatives

Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ related work experience required
  • 7+ years of management experience with demonstrated success in leading and motivating teams, setting clear performance metrics and goals, and fostering professional growth for team members, consistent with best practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Alignment with the Center’s leadership attributes: strategic mindset, integrity, inclusive decision making, accountability, effective communication, courage, positive influence, emotional intelligence, resilience, and vision mindset, required
  • Ability to lead and develop dynamic programs with the efficacy of best business practices, fiscal accountability, ability to influence and utilize critical players and resources, and deliver high-impact programs
  • Experience with program monitoring and evaluation to ensure program deliverables and impact goals are met
  • The ability to communicate the Center’s vision, strategy, and plans to staff, internal partners, and external audiences are required
  • Understanding of and passion for marine mammal health and science, and/or marine wildlife and environmental conservation preferred
  • Experience in non-profit organizations, primarily environmental in nature, and working with a large volunteer constituency is preferred
