Supporting the sector means empowering everyone.

How it started

By 33, Nurys Pedersen "had made it."

A Vice President in Washington DC, her career was colored by promotions, welcomed earnings, and a desk in the corner office.

But a decade in, feeling unfulfilled and searching for more, Nurys asked herself, "what could I be missing?"

So by 34, with little income, and no staff, Nurys founded: Careers In Nonprofits.

Leaving everything behind, she moved out of DC, and found a little office in downtown Chicago.

Upon arrival, Nurys began calling up local nonprofits. They were making a difference. And she asked if they needed help. They said, yes. So then, she started to recruit.

This time, her work felt different.

Today, Nurys loves what she does. And her #ILoveMyJob🧡 mission has helped over 700 nonprofit missions find passionate, hard-working people across the country.

A top executive recruiter in the Washington DC, her
career was colored by raises, unexpected earnings,
and desk on the top floor.

Then came, 34.

Suddenly for Nurys, rewards were replaced with remorse. Her workdays grew longer. Nights evaporated. And soon, exhaustion was confused for excellence.

"Welcome to the sweet smell of success," Nurys heard.

But by that time, she waved her goodbyes.

It was that year, in 2006, that Nurys started over. She moved out of DC, into a little downtown Chicago office, and started her own business.

She had one employee. She was the saleswoman. Operations manager. Marketer. Even the office receptionist greeting every guest that came through the door.

But soon, one employee turned into two. Two to four. And now, her organization has three staffing offices serving the nonprofit sectors of Washington DC, San Francisco, and Chicago.

Today, we know her formally as our President & Founder, Nurys Pedersen, of Careers In Nonprofits.

And she loves what she does.

Building a better, more inclusive nonprofit sector begins with writing inclusive job descriptions that attract a diverse pool of applicants.

Careers In Nonprofits restricts the use of gender-specific wording, uninviting insider jargon, as well as any use of "othering" language that challenges inclusive hiring practices and equal opportunities for diverse candidates.
